Project Description:

This project is grant aided by the Northern Ireland Executive via DCAL. The contracting authority is Ulster Branch, Irish Rugby Football Union. The Ravenhill Stadium, which is owned by the Irish Rugby Football Union, is located in South East Belfast and is the home of Ulster Rugby. While the Ravenhill Ground has been maintained over the years, 2008 saw the first stage of a modernisation programme for the stadium. Built at a cost of £5.5million the new corporate stand on the terrace side of the ground was opened for business in September 2009, boasting 20 corporate boxes, 532 premier seats and full bar facilities. In 2010 Ulster Rugby submitted a business case to government requesting funding from DCAL in respect of the second stage of the major modernisation of the stadium. The proposed re-development of the ground would see the construction of two new stands at the Aquinas and Car Park ends of the ground and the replacement of the existing grandstand. In November 2012 DCAL confirmed funding of £14.7m for the project. Three new stands will be built at the ground in a phased approach that will see capacity rise from 11,400 to 18,000. The first phase of the redevelopment will run from November 2012 to June 2013 and will see new stands built at both the Memorial and Aquinas ends of the ground. The second phase of the redevelopment will run from July 2013 to August 2014 and will see the demolition of the existing main stand and the construction of a replacement grandstand with a new promenade. The provision of an 18,000 capacity stadium will enable Ulster Rugby to meet its key objectives of growing the sport, attracting a new audience base as well as enabling Ravenhill to host games at the closing stages of major competitions and Tier 2 Internationals.
